Another weekend of nothingness (Although, this one was far less enjoyable as I wish I
was doing something) was only broken up by one event…the UFC 101 event at Ryan “Sugtor” L’s place on Saturday night. I’m usually pretty good at calling fights…but Saturday was embarrassing. Although Neer and Grove were both the better fighters, pure muscle and weight ended up winning out – and they lost both their matches to being controlled on the ground. BJ Penn (
Aka Fat Buddha) came in to his fight in top form to defend his lightweight belt, and showed his A-game to KenFlo who lost to a rear naked choke in the 4th round. But, the most heart breaking fight of the night was Forrest Griffin getting knocked out at 3:23 of the first round to the Spider, Anderson Silva. Although I knew Griffin was likely going to lose – I did not think it would be so decisive. Griffin’s attacks seemed clean enough, but Silva was there for a fight and his elusive fight style paid off. After knocking Griffin to the ground multiple times – and imposing his will on the ground for a short time – Griffin was knocked out by a jab. Regardless, Griffin came and gave it his all – which is more then we can say for anyone else who has fought Silva besides Dan Henderson and Rich Franklin. At least Griffin didn’t turtle up like Thales Leites did, or fight reserved like Patrick Cote.

Props to Griffin, and all hail Silva. I’m not sure who’s able to knock him off the #1 spot – but I would assume it’s someone who is impossible to knock out and who can manage to take Silva to the ground. I’m thinking perhaps Dan Henderson in a rematch?
